I've only started this today. I don't understand the preamble. If anyone could explain how to enter the 2nd, 4th and 8th answers to the "Key" part, I think I might be able to get on with it.

The answer to the second clue in the Key grid is entered normally, so would it be worth checking the answers you have for these 3 clues first ?

Does that mean that the fourth answer goes into the light starting at 10 and that three of the cells contain two letters?

Yes, the V appears in the first cell (numbered 10), the other three cells each contain two letters.
