There are 2 that I don't entirely undersatand. Please would someone explain ?

7d. Hawk half-seen between hill and old ruin (7) T - R - E - - . torpedo ? I can see tor (hill) + ped ( half espied ??) + o (old) .... but hawk = torpedo ?

16a Foul on goalkeeper? - more or less (7) N - I - - - E. noisome ? Is there a goalkeeper called Noi ?

Why the word 'determine' in 13 across?
In Chambers, it is a verb 'to fix' and so is 'NAIL' a verb 'to fix'.

Hi Danube! Whatever Chambers says, in modern conversation the words determine and tell are almost interchangeable:

e.g. - I can determine / tell how active you are on AB by putting danube in the search box
Nail does not fit in the grid, and even if it did I can't see how you could get nail from the subsidiary indications in the clue.
