For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I wondered about this, and thought "translating will be" must lead to SARA by "sara" meaning "will be" in another language (thinking of "Que sera, sera" - "Whatever will be, will be"). However, I haven't tracked down a language where "sara" means "will be". So the hexplanation is probably the "H difference" mentioned above.
Just a thought... but is this literally, um, a hard nut to crack? SIRIH is a synonym for betel and is IRIS reversed (ie translated, loosely speaking) + H for hard.
Sorry if this makes no sense - I haven't done the Guardian this weekend so don't have the original to look at. There isn't a nut theme by any chance?
