Repel and be repelled by salt perhaps

The answer is sulphate. I can see that 'hate' means to be repelled by, but how do you get the sulp bit.
In the same crossword: Dramatist, needing work shortly, taking partners on as past peak. As it was 3,6, and Ben Jonson fits, I guessed the right answer. But how on earth the cryptic part works I can't begin to fathom. Any help on either of these much appreciated.
