Can someone please explain how the answer to 17A relates to the clue which is:

"For duke, leaves Hill building Gothic"

The answer is ST?A?BE?R? and the only word I can find that will fit is 'strawberry' but for the life of me I cannot see how this is derived from the clue.

Thanks for the link. I enjoy learning something new but I still cannot see how the "For duke, leaves" fits in. I think perhaps this week's Listener has left my brain somewhat addled.
'Strawberry leaves' is an heraldic reference to the decorations / embellishments on a duke's coronet.

Thanks. All is clear now. If I had read Chambers more carefully I would have seen the reference to 'strawberry leaves'.
