Could someone please explain this clue to me? 1a Back out, if weak, retreating in failure (8)
cr??fis? - the answer must be crawfish - if + w reversed inside crash (failure) but what has crawfish got to do with "back out"?

New to me, but a quick check of Chambers Dictionary gives crawfish (aside from a variant of crayfish) as 'to retreat or back out, especially from a position in which one is being challenged.'

Thank you greyfox. I did look up Chambers but only under "crayfish" - doh!
