I've read the instructions but I don't understand what is meant by "barred-off unchecked cells". I can't find 6 cells in grids 1 and 2 that match any interpretation I can make. I have constructed grid 3 by following the rest of the instructions and will proceed with that but I would be grateful if someone could explain to me what these cells are.

timesquiz unchecked means that the square isn't part of both an across answer and a down answer. So you can't check your entry in this square by another answer in the opposite direction.
So for grid 1 the unchecked squares are:
top row - 2nd column
second row - 5th column
third row - 1st and 5th columns
fourth row - first column
bottom row - 4th column

Well I finally managed to solve it and just in time to submit. It's the first Listener puzzle I've tried and I enjoyed it although it took me quite a lot of time.
I agree with Cruncher that the way the puzzle is constructed to lead you through logically is quite amazing. Apart from the obvious need to gradually whittle down the possible solutions for a clue I found that there wasn't any need to make assumptions or use trial and error. I'm now looking forward to the next one.
