27a is habits. bit(part of horse tackle) has (gets) rings (goes round) bit. = habits.30a is obviously keel for ships bottom.

Thankyou both for your answers, keel is certainly a ship' s bottom and my first instinct was for habits, however that leaves me with ?ui?ye for 23d. My command of the French language is limited to a mediocre "O" level pass in the 1960s.
