Second answer is ETON
I have seen the other answered as 'snubs', but I'm afraid I don't get the reasoning myself.
snub
vt (snubbing; snubbed) to take up, cut short, rebuff, in a humiliating or mortifying manner; to rebuke; to check or stop; to bring to a sudden stop, eg to bring (a boat, unbroken horse, etc) to a stop by means of a rope secured to a post or stake; to cut or break short.
So, Catron, you're implying that Zola used a rope tied to a stake to stop her?
glasman - I am not implying anything! The fact is that Mary Decker- Slaney was snubbed in 'that' race ie checked or stopped, as per the Chambers dictionary definition. What is the problem?
