23 d - American beer cut short? Sure, txt you numbers in boxes.
I suppose it must be "sudoku", but what bothers me is the "american beer" bit - surely that must be Bud (Budweiser), making "budoku". Is budoku a variation of sudoku? - or how do you get "sud"?

Thanks for answers - I was looking everywhere for sud - I now find that suds is a slang term for beer.

You do yourself down, CSIambleside - you had it right the first time; it is suds that is cut short to get the SUD and has nothing to do with Bud.

Yes SUD is clearly the answer.

If it had of been BUD then the clue would probably have read ' American beer - no head' ,or some such indicator that it was the last, rather than the first letter, that needed removing.
