Dam is the female parent of an animal, normally a domestic animal. A horse is a domestic animal.

My initial thought was arab (a kind of horse) but it was a bit tenuous with the first person bit of the clue.

I hate these clues where you get all the possible characters filled in but the answer is still ambiguous!
