kayakamina. I'll happily accept 'PER' as meaning 'for a' or 'for each', but not as indicating plain 'a'. Per poor clue, I'm afraid. Thanks again anyway.

Kayakamina is correct, managra. According to Chambers, per means "for each or a".
... and they use it again in today's Toughie.
