never thought of looking in the back of chambers to identify the conversion factor

true about "Latin" - but that crossword was all about etymological cluing

change of thought processing this Friday for the quarterly numerical (i think)
I like these circular crosswords-they often appear in the Spectator. I'd have finished this quicker if I hadn't spent some time trying to fit 'juggler' into the second ring.
Living up to my user name, got there in the end. Seemed to me the 7/8 names was more an intellectual exercise for the setter, rather than a worthwhile challenge for the solver.
i am missing outmost letter of clue 40. can anyone help
If you go to Things Cruciverbal and the word matcher, it will allow you to work out anagrams where you know five of the six letters.
I myself would like a hint towards 43 as neither of my possible answers seem to fit the clue.
thankyou patch. 43 is an unusual spelling of a simple word for partition
I reckon that tomorrow is when the next number puzzle appears. Isn't that right?
Something to look forward to, eh?
Can anyone help, please? Does the inventor start in the first cell of the sixth ring? If it does I'm stuck.
Thanks, Andrew
yes. depending on what letters you have, try and think of a first name that might fit. google it with the theme and you should get his surname. that is how i proceeded

good luck
Andrew, you will know the person's name, but maybe for something connected with what the puzzle is all about rather than the actual invention.
I'm confused now! Are his initials not P A?
Thanks, Andrew
If you are thinking of Philip Astley, then while you are in the right general area, you need to be in a different century and country and think more specifically! Sorry
Thanks Perseverer (and Midazolam), Back to the drawing board then! Andrew
Can anyone give me a hint on 40? I'm assuming that "not" is removed, but I can't make the clue fit any of the 3 possibilities I've got for entries:
1. the word given by "word matcher" with an accent on the 3rd letter
2. plural of the heavenly stuff
3. word given by Chambers when you factor in a U.
Am I on the right lines at all? Thanks
Spiderfreak
Yes NOT is removed. The word is not jumbled and reads outwards. I presume you already have checking letters at 1,3,and 5 giving you A?N?M?
Clamzy, many thanks, got it sorted now. I was assuming that 39 was the unaltered one, reading inwards. Doh!
