Cruncher, you have an interesting concept of seasonal goodwill if it includes dissing the Listener setters as a group wild horses couldn't drag you to meet (the dinner is primarily for setters).

And the free dinners are long gone now that there are so many all-correct solvers.

failedagain - my apologies. I certainly wasn't dissing the setters. Not intentionally. It was the small-mindedness and sheer rudeness of some of the solvers that makes me want to keep my distance. Anyway I've probably made a blunder somewhere so I doubt I'm all-correct after all. No - it has been a memorable year of puzzles and some awesome setting.

Spiderfreak - I'd check the first word in Brewer's. Should find what you want. My edition is well out of date!

Another excellent puzzle, all finished except a few words of the quotation. Any hints as to the source of the quotation would be most welcome so that I can relax for Christmas. A happy Xmas to all solvers!! (even Listenerite who for some inscrutable reason keeps logging on to this site!)

Well, I wouldn't say easily! I tried 'p--- of s------s' (full words of course)but didn't get anything useful.

jamesah, when in Google add the surname of a famous pair of married 19th century poets to the words you've already tried.

It's the jumbled names that are causing me problems - none of my anagram solvers seem to cope with proper names.

Jamesah, if you can guess the first word in the quotation, and add it to what you've tried, plus "quotations" it's there on Google.

Great, many thanks. I never thought of entering 'quotations' as well. I must remember that for the future. I had no idea of the poet so would never have got it that way.

The grid is full and 13 cells highlighted, but ... no title.
Are all the child names adjacent without any redundant letters? I have a possible 10 out of 16 but not convinced.
Does Brewer really help with the title or hint?
If so, which edition - my latest is 14th?

Philoctetes - yes there's to be a Listener in a TV / puzzles supplement to next Saturday's Times .. I was just being a bit premature in bowing out for 2008 since I have a busy schedule and may not reach a keyboard before 2009.
MartianAlien - no the children's names are not always adjacent, but any separating letters are not exactly redundant, more part of a pattern. Brewer's was no help at all to me - neither of my editions seems to have the quote despite my checking where Cruncher suggested. Just glad it's not crittical!

MartianAlien - this may not help, but if you have found 10 childrens' names, then you should get the rest in exactly the same way. None of the names are unusual, and are all within the theme!

I just noticed that the last puzzle of the year is probably going to be by Elgin - his last two Listeners appeared 4 years ago - the last one won the AGC, the penultimate was solved correctly by only 32 people. Is this maybe a fiendish attempt to whittle down the all-corrects at the final hurdle? Could be a nice challenge. Enjoy

Uh oh!! Thanks for the warning, CluelessJoe. My kids have just presented me with the new edition of Chambers, complete with the free sign-up for the Reference site. Looks like it may prove a very timely present!

Yes indeed, my earlier post was a rather clumsy attempt to wind up the opposition. Apologies for any unintentional offence but the idea of being holed up in a hotel with likes of Listenerite and his mates seems a rather dubious reward for keeping a clean score-sheet. As ever the fun of tackling and solving these puzzles, and the pleasure of some of the exchanges on this thread, is a far greater reward.
