Although I've always taken the Spectator, I've never attempted the corssword, but I thought I would have a go at the Christmas one. I have had a stab at it and got about a third of the answers, but I wondered if anyone had any hints / tips / pointers on how best to deal with the rubric. Also the particluar style of the clues ?

Also is Dumpynose wishing us a Joyous Noel?

Would some kind person end my frustration with 37A?
?I?HA?: Director has the stew
First letter probably D. Why can't I see the answer?
Can you help me with how the eighth word can be split into two elements akin to those of ?U??N, M?R?E?, REE?, and ?R?WN. I am really frustrated to be stuck at this last hurdle.
Thanks in advance
37A I think you are expected to put THE into DIR and come up with a word that means fluster or stew - Good luck - come back to me if you have any other problems - I've completed it apart from the elements the eighth word can be split into.
