Many thanks for link
Thanks for the link. Does anybody else think there's something wrong with the wordplay in 25d?

The error in the Christmas crossword is irritating. Several people thought 'spare' would be a good answer for 105, whereas it now appears it's good to share.
Thanks for the link.

I agree with AHearer about 25d and have e-mailed Doc who is having a few problems lately!
Question Author
Yes, 'share' was very fortuitous! It doesn't however resolve the ambiguity over 37dn, to which both 'diner' and 'doner' appear to be possible solutions (I've chosen the former).

It's a shame about the current puzzle, though the answer to 25dn is easy enough to discern.

If I've grasped the theme correctly (though it's early days yet) I'm having real problems with 17ac.
happy to swap 17a for some of the other theme answers; is there a good searchable list somewhere, where I can look for some (theme answers) that night fit the letters I have?
Question Author
6ac courier
7dn optima
4dn helvetica
13dn (maybe) novarese

...or am I way off beam? I can't find a searchable (and comprehensive) list anywhere, so far. Guess I'll have to buy Chambers 2008, and I hope Doc's on commission!
I believe 17a is Isbell. Still need 18d, 31d. I'm confused by 18d, because there'd be something that fits except for my crossing letter for 21a, and I'm pretty sure 21a is correct.
The spelling chosen by the designer of 18d is very idiosyncratic - are you sure you have it right?

There's a very comprehensive list at http://www.fonts.com/findfonts, but that gives far more to hunt through than the 26 one has to check if one has the new edition of Chambers. This is obviously a marketing exercise! When I bouhgt my copy I thought this was a very pretty feature of the new edition, but little thought I'd be using it to solve a puzzle so soon.

I think 31d starts with the letter of the alphabet before 18d.
Crossword 1895 can be cracked without Chambers 2008, especially with the hints given above, so don't spend your money just yet, bathtub!

I agree with AHearer; crossword 1895 is clearly a marketing ploy, and a most irksome one for those of us who have not yet bought (or won) Chambers 2008. However, the Wikipedia entry on typefaces confirms many unclued lights (though not 13d, 17a or 18d, which can all be otherwise confirmed in the Internet).
Thanks for the hints; I now have all the typefaces, I think, and just need 20d to finish! Anyone have a hint as to who or what "Noble" is?

Question Author
noble gas = inert gas
Question Author
... sorry, should have added that Geraint's is an anagram of inert gas.
I was given a 2008 Chambers for Christmas, but that's not helping me much at the minute as I can't find the reference to typefaces! Any hints as to where they're hidden?
Look at the first page for each letter.
bathtub - gah! yes, "inert gas" hit me suddenly as I was involved in something else this morning. Funny how often that happens, and funny how something as simple as capitalizing an "N" can take me so far afield that I can't find my way back. At least now: finished!
Thanks AHearer. A doh moment!
Just about all there, but can't get 18D. Can someone help? Thank you.
I believe 18d is XCTASY SANS
Thank you.
38a could be Jensen or Jenson if 31d is Weiss. I don't have the latest Chamber's as I hope to win it by entering these crossword comps! If anyone has a copy with the lists of fonts could you please confirm the correct entries?
