Thanks for the link midazolam.
Better watch what you say this time people!
Yes I suspected that too.
Thanks for the link midazolam.
Thanks for the link. For the record if you put this address - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,12350, 00.html - into your title bar it will take you to the main Times/Listener page enabling you to check the latest solution etc as well downloading the new puzzle.
Thank you midazolam
Thanks for the link. Quite a nice puzzle, I think, though I feel the preamble would read better as "On entering the 5dn, the result...."
Question Author
Agree, another well constructed effort from Samuel. I liked the unusual slant of the cluing to give the extra letters, they are not easy to construct.

Not sure why Listenerfan has jumped in so early (unless you are Samuel?) but I agree any hint will give the game away. Although 19 across stood out early on and it all fell into place from there

well done Samuel
I have a feeling that Samuel's last contribution was the subject of (ahem) heated debate on the ethics of this board
Last time there was a Samuel, a comment was made about the setter having a high opinion of himself, to which a *close friend* took exception.
Some wonderful clues in this one. How Samuel managed to make the surface reading of the affected clues make sense before AND after adjusting a word in each is beyond me.
Many thanks for link
Thanks Midazolam. Nice puzzle, but so far an undemanding start to the year - suspect they have a killer in store for us all pretty soon!
Midazolam, thank you for the link.

CluelessJoe, I quite agree. I often trip up early in the year so I'm a bit wary at the moment. I think I'm OK so far though.
Smashing puzzle, but I'm in two minds about treating 19a thematically. To do so would mess up the grid, but to not do so (nothing against split infinitives,me) would leave the situation unresolved...........hmmmmmmmm
I have the same doubts about the end game Bobbycollins. We are told that on entering 5 down the motion is inconclusive. I don't see how entering 5 down changes anything. 19ac resolves the deadlock but not to my satisfaction as all the others adjoin the perimeter.
The preamble suggests that only 10 answers are 'moved'. So I reckon 19ac stays unchanged.
I got myself into deep water with Samuel's last puzzle, imagining a much more complex resolution than he'd meant, so I'm going to stick to the simple version this time round.

Yes Cruncher, Samuel's last puzzle was indeed "the cause of much pain", and I seem to recall that the editorial team ended up allowing alternative answers. This time there's another apparent anomaly but I reckon it's safest to ignore the ambiguity as you have done. (I did too)
You had me worried, bobbycollins - after a bitterly cold Saturday indoors, my entry was already in the post - but I think Cruncher and cluelessJoe have got it right. Not only does the preamble specifically say "ten", but those ten are also checked normally, which is the case with 19ac left as it is and wouldn't be if it were tampered with. I hope we are right - I too remember the bad blood from Samuel's last puzzle...
Your thoughts on the endgame are all very much appreciated. I'm going with the flow.

Thanks.
