Confused. 47a 'general agreement' consensus or concu---s Surely 48d is unite (join together) but doesn't fit with consensus. 36d protestant and 44d on sight? Help please.

IMHO, this was dubious... -

Elide - as, "O'er" - the removal of letters gives the 'joining' of sounds - however, neither my dictionaries nor OED (Online) has this meaning, so I'll be interested in what others think...

...or have I completely lost the plot!? :-)
Chambers has Elide as to suppress or abridge.
There's nothing else that'll fit - think the clue
could have been better
I know it's used in poetry and music Mr King................but simply to omit something in order to "smooth out" the rhythm or metrication...............
