EV 851 Man of Mystery

Relatively straightforward again, but took a while to spot the elegance/relevance of the letters bracketting 36a. But it would have been even smarter if 36a had been a down entry.

Agree that it was relatively straightforward. One point about 36a --- Just over ten years ago ( the first EV I attempted ) reference was made to the same country and the letters in part of the bottom line had to be entered accordingly. Without giving too much away I wonder if that's the case here.

Hello novalis
Have only been completing EV for about 8 years before that I was attempting to solve it sans Chambers, foolish, I admit, so cannot comment on the previous reference. However, following last weeks comment about there not being an EV thread, even though there was one, I thought I'd start one, especially as Devadolly likes to see us nattering and chattering, aka N&C!!

Let's hope Devadolly joins in the N & C. The first two I attempted were without the aid of Chambers. I promptly went out and bought one!!! It is now very dog-eared but still does sterling service for EV and I refer to my 2003 edition only when necessary. I wouldn't be surprised to see the most recent edition become the basic reference before long.
As for this week's, I intend completing it in the manner I suspect is called for.

Hello DocHH and Novalis, Agreed. Nothing too complicated this week. I've been doing EVs since they first began, whenever that was, but rarely attempt to start one without the trusty Chambers at my right hand. Now the latest edition.(a much appreciated Christmas present after a few not too subtle hints).
Hi Doc
Only seem to see you on this thread these days - perhaps because I'm too busy with my blog he said, getting in a crafty plug.
I was gutted about the "Fields of Action" answer the other week, apparently the setter intended E(nglish) squire, using the "E" that was on the fence!! It's almost put me off bothering in future.
btw, have you seen my blog? I'd hoped that by now you would have put in an appearance.

Good Morning Everyone! Great to see all the N & C going on - see, you can do it!
Now as to this EV - I think you have all got a different one to me. I have just sat down with the calming cup of coffee after a very irritating morning and opened my EV......................I can't do a single one, yes, that is what I said----not a single one! I am totally ashamed and trying to decide whether to burst into tears, or throw something...............will look later.
As to EV in general, am a real Saddo, have been doing them since No 1. That one was about composers and got me totally hooked, until today that is..................I can't believe it.......................Sob, sob...........SMASH.........
Regards

Hello Devadolly,
I had trouble initially getting my head round the two different approaches necessary for across and down clues. Go and get some tissues, clean up the broken vase(?), make some more of your own blend coffee, sit down again and concentrate on the down clues.
Will lurk and help with hints on request.

Don't panic! Don't panic! I'm here.
Did get a chance for another look - with another cuppa, thank you for your 1d hint Novalis it would have been rather shameful if I had failed on that one wouldn't it? Still pondering the spray. Have only managerd the grand total of 7, I know that is shameful but it is probably pay-back time for feeling too big for my boots re last week (either that or I have worn my brain out!) Will plod on but plead for thematic hints in the hope I can work backwards. Very irritating as can usually get a decent amount done for Mr Loda.
DocHH, wouldn't have been a vase - love my flowers much too much to risk harming them, much more likely to be a kitchen utensil or something equally boring!

Thank goodness you're still hanging on there! A couple of extra, albeit diverse hints on 22d, the answer with 2 extra letters gives you a sparkling, refreshing summer alcoholic drink! How about a bit more help on 22d. A bet, above a really super hotel!! Then resort to your beloved Chambers!
I got 1a and 9a quite quickly. For 1a think earthquakes and an anagram missing a letter! For 9a think a short vinyl record, normally 4 songs, way back then, plus anagram of NAIL, minus that letter to give the definition of the first 2 words in the clue!
I think novalis and I are determined to get you to finish this!
I hope Himself has been patient with you this week as ever and you are given my express permission to ignore his dietary needs to concentrate on the more pressing matters of EV.
I bow to your diligence to solving EV from numero 1

Thank you DocHH. Himself in bad books so being quite well behaved biut wouldn't dare miss feeding time.
Will plod on with your hints..............36a??????????????
Did say I had been 'doing' them since No 1, not that I had solved them.........big difference!
You are all learner's, have worn out 4 editions of Chamber's doing these dratted crosswords!

hello all
I too was celebrating last week on completing my first EV since mini physicsgirl was born .... come that, since she was about 10mm long! This week, a slow start, but will persevere after reading this thread. Junior is wrestling with a much more complex problem - how to control the pink starfish shaped blobs that keep appearing and use them to direct objects mouthwards for a good gumming!
Hope you're all well

I'm feeling 'Got at' here! There I am all ready to throw the dratted thing over the shoulder into the bin and you are all nagging at me and making me feel guilty......hhurumph!
I'd done 5d & 10d and have now accomplished 2a thanks to the broad hint. Still no politician and RP is by-passing all available brain cells.
Have various ideas about some, but can't quite 'finish'........12a sort of specs used by Lady Bracknell? 16a Oh how sparkly..................? 19a involving a bird of prey somewhere? 15d illegal 'double dating'?
As for 31a.........I dread to think!!!
Thanks to all for the crutches and many congratulations to you Physicsgirl, has young PG started on the DT quick Xword yet?

Just feel you have our support and pleased to be encouraged!
12a) The letter removed comes out twice, I had never heard of this word, I only knew the one that ends "nette", but the word is lurking towards the end of the definition of the word I knew in Chambers.
16a) Your idea on that would certainly "ring" true!
19a) The bird of prey is 4 letters occupying 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th square, because it has eaten A letter.
15d) No, you have chosen the word that is superfluous as being part of the definition! Think of a lovely cheesey creamy, chocolate topped italian dessert! (as an aside, 34a, I thought the answer here only related to schoolchildren who did not go to school, that should clinch 15d)
31d) You must remember the phrase "I'll have a pee, please Bob!" What were they asking for! The "turn" is also depart and a game. You are then looking for a one letter word, in the first column of the start of Chambers proper that means all in Scotland!
I'll keep lurking, soon be refreshment time.
Ciao
