Davey .... I don't understand the wordplay, but one of the definitions of loblolly in Chambers is: a muddy SWAMP or mire.

daveyb, I have been doing the Wee Stinker for years, and usually manage it, even winning it once. The last three weeks I haven't been able to finish it and am really frustrated as I don't like being beaten. The question is - have the puzzles been more difficult or is my brain degenerating?

As kettledrum points out loblolly = swamp anag of with (w) +(maps) maps being the ans to 7 not 9 as in the clue. I think the clue numbering is all to ****. Again as kettledrum says Geog and Biog should be swapped, clue numbering wrong again. There is no 26 down or 25 across. The Stinker is hard enough without these inconsistencies. Any idea why 22 down is INDIA?

Davey b, thanks for replying. I'm sorry I have no idea why it could be India. I was so disheartened this week by the number of clues I couldn't solve, I threw the paper out. Thanks for not suggesting it was diminishing brain power.

The second verse of the clerihew begins "What I like about Clive" hence the answer "India".

But how do you get India from the clue "Where singer's 5" ?

It sounds far-fetched but I think I justified it by putting a v for 5 into India and the result is of course "in diva"!
