39ac Line through Mars city: A-L-S. Is it AULIS? If so, why? Seems tough this week. Does anybody have any idea how many people send in the Jumbo Cryptic? Anybody ever won the prizes? Thanks!

Thanks Claud.Butler and taylor - but it just clicked as I read your suggestion. Answer is ARLES: city in S France. Ares is the Greek god of war, corresponding to Mars in Roman mythology. Anybody know about the entry numbers?
No idea about numbers, but I won the prize about six or seven years ago, in a Tolkien-themed puzzle. Never read him, but I was on holiday with my family at the time and they filled in the gaps!
