I have TE?LAR, which I believe is TELLAR, but I cannot tie 'tellar' to 'shoot'. (It would likely help if I had access to a Chambers!)

Tellar is a variant spelling of Tiller, a shoot.

You can use the Chambers website. In this case it confirms that Tellar is the only possible answer. If you do the Mephisto regularly you should definitely get the Chambers.
