Arid areas are dry (and grass is sparse)
as = are
A's = Aces
and spaces are areas

Understand AREAS. But what has ARID got to do with grass?

A region is said to be arid when it is characterized by a severe lack of available water, to the extent of hindering or even preventing the growth and development of plants. (which fits the clue in that it can affect grass)
