ante - anagram of etan (sounds like eaten)

Thanks sedge47 for your quick response
a N te = stake

ate = consumed
N = and (as in fish 'n' chips)
Hadn't thought of your angle Sedge, not there when I posted. One of us right!

Thanks johnalex ... two explanations for the same answer

Both seem to work ... I wonder which one the crossword setter had in mind ?
johnalex, I thought 'reportedly' must be a homophone. Don't do this xword so don't know the style!
. . . should read one of us IS right! I'm still thinking N for AND only because we've seen this before with Skeleton, the letter N being 'consumed' by the word ATE. What do you reckon? ja
.. if you've seen similar before in this xword then you're almost certainly correct!
JA - I am sure that yours is the correct wordplay. The clue is in the words 'and digested' (ATE with 'N taken-in)
Thanks for your feedback puzz'Rus as I know you're a regular Skeleton solver. Also Sedge for friendly exchange. ☺ja
