Listener 4053 Phoney by Wasp

What a pleasure to have a straightforward puzzle that we could manage. This one was a pleasure from start to finish and great for us relative newcomers. I am glad there is one like this now and then - a fine one to prompt complete Listener beginners to attempt.

This cropped up in last week's thread also, so for those who don't already know here's the lowdown.
Anne Bradford has solved cryptic crosswords every day for more than 50 years keeping careful notes of definitions in case she should meet them again. Eventually her collection grew large enough for her to consider publishing in the form of a crossword dictionary. This has now reached it's seventh edition.

Indeed, Tenflags, it takes up lots of time but occasionally there is not so much cold solving - I breathe a sigh of relief on those days. In addition to the books on Mysterons' list, I have learned (and still learn) lots from Chambers Crossword Manual by Don Manley. There are useful lists of the letters that so often form part of clues, and he runs through most of the tricks setters use. ISBN 0 -550-10220-5 Another addition for your Christmas List.
It is there (on page 4) Robinruth - I agree it should be higher up !

Thank you Robinruth and Mysterons again.
Yep that's another one that someone (who doesn't know it yet) is going to get me.
I have just picked up last weeks listener and only a quarter of the way through it so I think I will time out on that one. - checked the thread though and there are more books to get on quotations (oxford) and fables (brewers) it seems ! those reindeer are going to need their wheetabix.
BTW. I agree with your view about only 2 letters from the 'tuv' group Mysterons - unless these tricky suckers are even more dasterdly than I could ever imagine. - mind you given the comments flying around on last weeks one who knows. Having seen those comments and not yet finsihed last weeks yet I'm Bit worried now that I have inadverently started with the two of the 'easiest' listener entries - I will see what next weeks looks like and how much time I have. Anyway TVM for book recommendations.
