Still not sent it off.

I think 25 down is cove for covering,nose for nose ring(bt this probably counts as two words hyphened). or hove for hovering. there are other iffy words.
Any other ideas we are overlooking?

I have sty for 27 across for styring?

Chambers gives 8 possibilities, including ring-dove and ringbone. This is obviously another oversight, and I'm sure all options will be permitted.

My first instinct was cove for covering - as you say
however tone as a seperate word placed after the theme word seems a little closer to the theme perhaps.,
and that was what i finally went with and sent off.
i went with stringy as well.
