Can't get it online this morning. The Spectator has posted the chess column as the crossword in error. Have e-mailed Doc. I will check again later. I know that we are all desperate.

Thank you for the link. With my unsteady hand drawing a neat red box round the crossword always takes time.
Just a quiz question ( closes next Friday ) which Spectator crossword devotees may be able to help with.
Optimistic duo ( 5, 6 ) The answer contains ( not is ) the name of a town or city which is not in the British Isles. In the spirit of Spectator/EV/Listener crosswords ( heavy )hints and pointers would be appreciated if you can help.

Novalis, I've been pondering your duo. A way out of your fine mess may be a matter of reversing a common pairing. Though the city (abbr) is there whichever way round they go. 'Optimistic' is how they're often described, and it's close to being a synonym for the name of one of the two.
I'm not at all convinced by this, but at least someone was paying attention to your question... ;)
Maybe it would be better to post it as a new thread. I'm sure you'd get more responses that way.

That was an interesting thought, Bathtub. We have been pondering Novalis' problem for some time (through the EV thread a few weeks ago) and have come up with precisely very little. At least you are down to only one (what did you come up with for the other two, N?). Bearing in mind that the town is just contained, I revisited the h-g's first thought - but it still doesn't produce anything I recognise. When you do, finally, get the answer I would love to know.
Thank you Bathtub and Jogler for your input and suggestions. I've looked at the Laurel and Hardy connection and a full filmography for them but nothing jumps out. I know that the question has been posted elsewhere on this forum but to no avail there either. That's why I thought I'd try through the Spectator and EV threads as well. It looks as if my friend - and the other enquirer - will be sending the quiz in ( it closes next Friday ) with an educated guess.
Just as a P.S.- unless somebody else shares my name and general location and enters The Spectator crossword it looks like I won £30 on Spectator 1945.
