Dickens and Deuce were once used as names for Satan, the Devil. People thought that, if one actually said "What the devil!", Satan would appear. So, dickens and deuce were substituted for "devil". More than that I do not know. Perhaps some more-knowledgeable poster can link these to your clue.

Thanks a lot - I can now see that if I add a "d' to "deuce" I det "deduce" which means to reason - so I get it all now - had never heard of Dickens and Deuce; so thanks!
