An early start as I have been invited to a special assembly at my Grandson's school.
Fortunately the puzzle was reasonably straightforward except for the SW corner & 43a!

Of course, with it being set by Doc, reference to Brewer is necessary, and the theme is
certainly applicable to me!

As I mentioned in my opening remarks I am dubious about the SW corner as there appears to be at least two words which match the theme.

Have I gone wrong somewhere?

Yes, Kayakamina, I think you may have gone wrong since, for me, 39ac confirms the only possibility. (38 ac begins the next word and limits the choice.)

I think I've done this, but my Brewer is very (very) old and does not have all the answers. I'm reasonably happy with checks made online, but again cannot find an online version of Brewer that confirms all. Does anyone know if such a thing is available? For what it's worth, I concur with the observation that there are six internal unclued lights. Does anyone else think that 23 across might have two solutions (though one only appears, so far as I can tell with my limited resources, as the beginning of a longer phrase)?

..well, having checked they don't unfortunately, but 23a does.
As regards 23a I suppose the second option (alphabetically) is preferred as it is plural whereas the first (not in my edition of Brewer) can be singular or plural.

Lubumbashi, you need to start with a three letter word, followed by a four letter word.

I'm glad I'm not the only one a bit confused.

The preamble states that of the 9 unclued lights running around the perimeter there are 2 of two words.
My final solution has 3! Two along the top row starting with T & B and another along the bottom row starting with L.

Have I plucked the wrong words from my old Brewer?
