Can anyone who is doing today's EV please confirm the following-

1) The number of letters in the clue reading ' Queen starts to handle useful instrument' ?

2) That the number of letters (12) is correct for clue ' Design German's day with English nets and line'?

Not doing it for me tjmw, am still in my favourite history period and can't get the fabulous Blanche in anywhere! Will have to abandon ship now nd apply myself to deciding what to take to Warwick/Stratford on Thurs through to Tuesday - anyone know how warm it is down yon?
Hi Novalis

I've also been wondering which word was in Brewer but not Chambers, and I think it must be 'he gives up job' clue.
I've sent off the completed grid and am only asking out of interest.
Cheers K
Do'h - that one is in Chambers; must get new glasses!

Still curious as to the Brewer word!
Maybe Brewers gives the denouement, and not the answer to a specific question ???
Dd - don't know what to advise on the weather. We are just travelling back north from a very warm and sunny weekend in the great metrolops. As i write, courtesy of East Coast, the weather is getting steadily sunnier; it also seems quite warm but this could be the fact that the train heating is on! Forecast is certainly for cooler weather so situation normal I suspect. We enjoyed this EV but it was certainly of a trickier disposition. The link was obtained, as others have said, by googling a selection of the words that wouldn't fit and getting a hallelujah moment. Until that point I had not been sanguine about creating a three word phrase. We did enjoy the theme and the way it all fitted together - eventually!
To resolve the Brewers question - I treated myself to the latest edition today ( 18th - my previous one is 14th ). All the thematic answers plus the corresponding grid entries are listed there but under the masculine form of the middle word to be written below the grid.
Am still very much in the dark!! Just cannot get a grip on the few unfinished clues and just can't think what to look up in Brewers. Have Googled 'til blue in the visage but still cannot connect the 'line' with a femme.
Will take the blessed thing with me tomorrow but as will be minus the BRB (Himself declares that I can either take the BRB or my pillow - not both) I don't hold out much hope of completion.
Hi Devadolly!

In Brewers try generic terms for monarchs, not specific people.
Also, as Dr. B and Turnerjmw suggested in earlier posts, Google those thematic elements which you already have in place as a group and then look at the Wkipedia article.
Finished my 2nd EV! I never could have completed it without all your useful hints and clues - thank you everyone!
