I thought this a very adroit offering that I much enjoyed.

Finding the confirmation may have been superfluous to completing the grid (but how could one be sure of that until one had the confirmation?), but was necessary to appreciating fully the art that went into the construction. It does seem unsatisfactory when an entry can be sent in without the (partial) solver having a full understanding of what was going on, but in this case it's difficult to see what else could be asked of the solver to establish that s/he had a complete understanding without that extra something seeming artificial and unconnected to the theme.

I enjoyed the cluing and the theme very much - thanks, Bufo.

Afraid that I too found this rather dull. My last clue solved was 17a) but since I had the four unchecked letters, and there was only one possible grid entry, I could have submitted the puzzle without solving it at all (if I so wished). This situation rendered the extra words pretty much irrelevant to one who had a fairly good idea of what was going on anyway. Like others I couldn't be bothered with the final bit. I enjoy crossword puzzles, not numericals or word searches.

My wife often refers to me as "Victor".I wonder why?

I can only marvel at the excellent and clever construction but agree with others that for the solver this left something to be desired - the grid filled pretty quickly and once it became obvious "what's going on" the endgame was a bit of a slog to match everything up.

I also completed this during the football on Sunday (this being an Anglo-German household we were in a win-win situation!). Two easy ones in a row I thought.

Speravi - I might agree with you except that the pre-amble indicated that the explanation given by the misprints only showed what had gone on and not any instruction for doing anything further.

Have not the faintest idea what's going on here. Cold solved about half the clues but have yet to figure how to create a grid entry out of the answers. Would presume that the clue answer becomes a further clue but also wonder whether it's a complete red herring. Hmmmm. Not so easy for me

Look at the length of the grid entry in relation to your solved clues. The relation will be the same in every case.

I'm finding it tough too - Wednesday and only six clues done! Sadly about to throw in the towel.

This one grew on me. Initially I didn't like it and thought it would be a slog but as I understood what was going on my enjoyment grew and as I've just seen the relevance of the title I've had the complete experience....very nice. (Although I can see why people don't like it as a lot of the artistry involved in the construction is lost when complete understanding of the puzzle isn't required for a submission.)

Nice to be back in step. Since Christmas I seem to have been running a puzzle behind everyone else due to my course commitments so when I come to the AnswerBank thread it's long gone cold....)

Yes, Cruncher, I think a lot of us missed the so very obvious for a while - and don't you feel silly when it is staring you in the face!

We came late to this and found it pretty pedestrian. The method of entry became obvious early on and one didn't need to work out all the misprints. Conversely, deducing the instruction from a collection of some of the correct letters was of no help in solving the remaining clues. 4 or 5 out of 10 for this one.
