Good afternoon Mr. and Mrs. UK and all ships at sea....

I thought this was a perfectly fine puzzle, not an earth-shattering PDM but solidly constructed nonetheless. And and am I wrong in seeing an extra letter in the wordplay of 42a, that does not in fact appear in the quote?

I somehow stumbled upon how to treat the 8 answers before having the quote, so I did not fully appreciate the nature of those 8 answers until that point.

Not even looked at this yet as I was in France for the weekend and struggling with a good but tough Listener. I hope to be suitable hornswoggled in the next day or so...
My copy of the ODQ is the concise one. Will the quotation be in there?
Hi Zita

It's certainly in my beaten up old edition.
Thanks K; mine's beat up, too, but I wasn't sure if the concise version would have the quote. I remember a Speccie that had to do with native Americans as a theme and my concise was no use to me at all..
Hello Zita-Green, nice to see you joining in with the EV, light hearted thread, Jogler(s) words not mine, but here you will normally get hints only!! However in answer to your question, I have both the current edition of ODQ, and the 3rd edition of the concise version of ODQ. It is in both, I suspect that if it's in the 3rd edition of the concise it will be in subsequent ones!

You now need to tell us your tipple, (doesn't matter if it's not alcoholic) and it is imperative to join in with the banter! I am sure you will find that many hints are actually in the banter.

Bonjour AndrewG-S! Hope you had medical supervision when doing the Listener! I had never heard of this quotation, and certainly not the author, I'm just a simple scientist.
My favourite tipple...ummm in the morning Yorkshire tea and lots of it; can't face the day otherwise. In the evening, nothing suits me more than a good, oaky, full-bodied bootilicious red wine
Hi again Zita

It occurred to me that you may want a more serious discussion of the crossword and individual clues and themes. I can give you the name of another site where folk meet, admittedly in less social surroundings, and debate the EV in more detail.

Contact me if you are interested.

Regards.
Doc HH, I should have had medical supervision, but unfortunately not this week. Anyway all done so now moving ahead with EV, have about half the gird filled so must be time to start looking for the quote soon - I have no literary background (a bit of science, law and economics), so like you this probably won't be obvious, but I the enjoyable bit of doing these is often reading up about something/someone you have never heard of, on a number of occasions it has even caused me to go and buy the book - I seem to recall reading some strange detective story linked to bell ringing in East Anglia after doing one EV. Incidentally my particular favourite poison is claret.
Would I be right in thinking that the relevant author had an anniversary on Sunday?
Yes.

After reading the preamble each week, one of the first things I do is check out anniversaries etc.in case the setter has based the puzzle on such an event.
Thanks, still can't find the right quote though...
Afternoon all,

I’m new to this thread, but recognise many friendly cyber faces from the Listener discussions elsewhere. I rediscovered EV when my wife requested a Telegraph crossword subscription for Christmas. They don’t seem to be as difficult as I remember, and make a welcome break after the travails of the weekly big one.

I have just finished this during a dreary telephone conference at work, but am puzzled since the final entries (unless I am missing something) don’t have a total ellipsis with the quotation, but am more than happy to be corrected.

PS: dr b, you’re very welcome to the bears. Enjoy the trip.

Greetings to all

Hey bobbyc, welcome to the EV thread. I am not sure what an ellipsis in this context, but the missing part of the quote suggests that a Y is in every X. So, each of the 8 "treated" answers has a word meaning Y inside a word meaning X.

Fortunately the (black) bears are only after my peanut butter sandwiches; grizzlies are a bit further north. Leaving tomorrow! Today is passing very slowly!
thanks, dr. b

it's just that my X words aren't obvious synonyms - apart from those at 12 down, 26 down and 16 across

Once again, have a great trip.
The X's are listed in Chambers - definitions 1-8
double doh

thank you
All starting to look a bit more ship-shape now I have found the right quote
Nice to see you here bobbycollins :)
Kayakamina, what is this other site which is more serious than this nice chatty one?
Copelander, that intrigued me too, but then I thought, "who want's to be serious when enjoying oneself?"
