I have put Jimmy
I went with Jimmy, as he's better known...
Thankyou nogginthenog & Lie-in-King,you are a star on this site Lie-in-King,no disrespect to you nogginthenog.
I will go with Lie-in-Kings answer.

Thankyou to you both much appreciated.
Sorry redman41,I will go for your answer as well.

Thankyou for your help much appreciated
Both answers fit the crossword grid! However, if you consult any list of Presidents of the USA you will find James Earl Carter listed (in the same way that you will find John Fitzgerald Kennedy - not Jack, as he was also known) listed! So, I suspect Lie-In King you are incorrect!
Fair enough, we'll have to wait & see, but I've never heard or read of him being referred to as "James Carter"...
Seconds out, round one, Lie-in-King. I'm backing you!
Hi cupid & ta! These ambiguous answers are cropping up too often lately - a crossword clue should have only one valid answer - IMHO...
At his inauguration (in 1977) he was referred to as James not Jimmy!
You never see Ronnie Reagan listed either do you??!!
garysmith, with a crossword clue like this one (and they do come up sometimes) you obviously know the answer, so there seems little point in using this answer bank. It doesn't matter how many people leave an answer, nor what the consensus is, it is still up to the newspaper editor (or crossword compiler) whose decision will be final in the case of a prize winning crossword as to which answer is accepted, so I wonder what is the purpose of posing the question?

A recent crossword I answered had a down clue:Traffic control measure also called a sleeping policeman (5,4) where the 6th letter did not form part of an across clue. Of course, there were two possible answers - the one given in the solution was Speed Bump.

I suspect that this ploy is put into prize crosswords deliberately in order to make the competition just that - a competition! It's not a question of "general knowledge" as the title of the crossword suggests, it's pure luck as to whether you enter in the grid what is selected by the compiler or editor.

I suppose with clues like this one the answer is to buy two copies of the newspaper and submit two entries - which is what I have done! Maybe that's another ploy, to increase sales!!!
