18across. "Underwater searcher, could one say?" The answer is clearly either Douser or Dowser and I have seen both answers put forward. Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to which is correct and why. Many thanks

Thank you Kayakamina for your considered responses.Yes I am definitely going with DOUSER in view of your persuasive comments.Kind regards
Glad to help.

Good luck with your entry.

Cheers K
K, I understand your reasoning for "could one say" but this could also mean an obscure definition. An even fiver on what Saga give as an answer, or G & Ts on the loser?
You're on!

I agree, K, that "could one say" implies "sounds like" but it could also refer to an obscure clue. What about an even fiver on the result, when Saga publishes it? Or G & Ts on the loser?
All the best

Wow kayakamina & writesbad I did not dream that when I posted my query it would generate such interest and indeed would be the subject of a £5 wager!! I wonder whether you live close to each other because otherwise the purchase of the G&T's may be somewhat expensive!! Answer will be in Nov edition of Saga so will diarise to let you know. Many thanks again. I wonder if the compiler realised just how much opinions would be split on this clue!
Could it be "COMBER" which is a fish and comb is to search?
Question Author
Thanks crispybacon but it is - o - s - r so cannot be comber!
I would go with dowser as I take could one say to mean underwater searcher could also be one who searches for water under(neath)
Question Author
Sorry Mike11111 you have lost me with your explanation! I am still very torn which to put but the majority decision seems to be for Douser. However if you can explain your reasoning for Dowser a bit more clearly I could yet be swayed!! Thanks
