The answer must be "opposes", but I can't see why, apart from the literal.

I'm probably being very thick: can anyone put me out of my misery?

Thanks. I was assuming that there was more to it than that: wondered if there was extra, cunning word play, or archaic meaning of "opposes".

ximenean, you are not alone. I too do not understand the wordplay. Novalis stated the obvious, but did not explain the cryptic explanation!
I thought it was just a very weak cryptic def. The literal reading of the clue suggests an answer like "offends"; but since to disagree is to oppose, you get "opposes".

However, the distance between the attempted misdirection and the actual answer is not very great, making the clue a "fail' in my estimation.
