I think the word play is this:
I do object = AH
State = MA(ine)
giving AMAH (nanny)

AZED 2002. I don't think the answer "Ayah" makes any response to the inclusion of the word "state" in the clue, or am I missing something?

I had taken state to mean the same as hear, thus, AY = I

I was not taking into account 'state' which is MA (Maine) . (Object) AH about MA gives
