unknown = Y (variable in algebra, like X)

Maybe bibblebub- I assumed the unknown was y (as in Why) but the algebra explanation might be better (although y is not the most commonly used letter for an unknown in algebra)

that's just the way I've always read that sort of thing in cryptics, don't know if it is the correct way but it always works for me

You are right bibblebub. 'Unknown' in a crossword clue usually refers to algebra and can be either X, Y or less commonly Z.
