Looks like it could well be apples, but it seems a tad convoluted.

I put APPLES - the last bit is PILES (HEAPS) with the I removed.
As you say, convoluted - ap-piles (heaps) without the I ???

Many thanks for that folks, I was coping with the "piles", (excuse the unnecessary medical input), part of the solution but couldn't quite see the answer in it's entirity.
I think it's the verb: heaps, that is, applies, without the i = apples
