Not finished yet, but the grid fill is going smoothly, the theme has been cracked and therefore some reverse solving can take place, but, the rugby is beckoning. Certainly one for beginners and newcomers to have a go at (unlike last week).

3rd time lucky??

A pleasant diversion and something of a relief to get an easier one after the trials and tribulations of last week.
Well, I'm struggling with this, but I finished last week's!
cuts both ways dr b - you may finish by 5.59, but you do get to start at 10 am while most of us have to hang around until 4 in the afternoon!
I'm getting too old for any kind of clubbing, Friday, Saturday or whenever. Just happy to finish nowadays :)
I sympathise EagleCountry and agree wholeheartedly with RRs earlier comment that these missing/extra letters type clues are difficult.
I too found more troublesome clues than last week's and there are still a couple of "wordplays" I haven't resolved.
With reference to PuzzledBadger above, the post on the crossword centre board had a snide remark about cheating on AB. OK so the bloke's a plonker, but what's with this "cheating" allegation? Whom do we cheat? Ourselves? Then that's our business and no-one else's. Out of what do we cheat others? The "prize" is so insignificant as to be irrelevant. I just don't see how a friendly discussion of a puzzle can be cheating and as someone pointed out a few weeks ago there's no compulsion to be here.
Three years of sending in EV and one of the Listener and what do I have to show for it? Nada. Send me the insignificant, irrelevant prize - please, just once.
Only three:-)
So I'm the only one stuck on 9d, then?
Only two options, and neither of them is a word in BRB or a name on Google.
Can't see the location yet, either.
Am I being thick this week??
I have the building now. Just going to have to enter the only realistic possibility for 9d and have done with it. No idea about the first word of the instruction either, although I have figured out what the unclued entries are, of course. Yuck.
Rogue-Elfe if you have an iphone or ipad the £2.99 Advanced Crossword Solver is well worth it for easing frustrations such as 9 down. Thanks to whoever recommended here a little while ago, invaluable!
Rogue-Elfe, check Chambers under the first three letters.
perseverer, I only had the second letter and the last three, which was the problem.
Nice and straightforward this week which makes a pleasant change. I understand all the clues except 31ac. The answer is no problem as all the letters are checked but I have no idea how to work it out. Any hints would be gratefully received!
It's all OK - I was being thick all along. Had the wrong end of the stick for 15, taking it a bit too literally re 30d. Now that's sorted, it was easy. Jabone; no I don't have I-pad or anything like that. I'm still a bit of a technoluddite despite using this forum.
jamesah - look up
True to form 'Rear Gunner's' member Tenflags still trying to make it back to base.

I am glad that some 'A team' members; RuthRobin and Clamzy made the comments they did - it's strangely comforting as I also have (are) finding this difficult in comparison to last weeks (not that they are all difficult to me of course) and how easy this one is supposed to be given some comments made here. It is interesting how folks must see / think / try to solve clues in different ways.

I did watch the rugby but now finally have the grid pretty much filled (bar the unchecked) - trying to make sense of the letters /instruction (a few gaps and must have a few errors in there to sort out). I don't have an IPad either so same problem on 9d but hey ho. An idea about the theme but time to struggle on.

PS: cluelessJoe - you are welcome to consider yourself a member of the 'Rear Gunner's' club but you are of course usually up there with the best of them.
tenflags - You may not have errors in the instructions - tho' it may look like it till one penny drops.
In follow-up to midazolam's question on p1, is it the consensus that one should not further "m______" the unclued entries, but rather fill in any missing blanks? My initial reaction was the same as TheBear69's - that is, that the "instruction" seemed to require further adjustment. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
