If I put 14 down (urge salute for simple sanck - 3,2,5) as egg on toast,
I can't fit in 28 across (village hero?) as hamlet. letters so far are ??m?e?

I agree but that would make the answer to 14 down egg on t?h?t?

Maybe it's a compiler's mistake.

which letter of your down clue goes into 28across stopping it being Hamlet
