MM Links April 2011 [Week 2]
41 Answers
Once again, I bid “Good Morning” to all MM Linkers. This is “The Count” (aka middlestump) taking to the crease for a second innings. Last week, I knew that I was opening the floodgates and awarding a multitude of “runs”. The question is “Can you continue with such high scoring during the current round”? As you may have guessed, this week I am talking cricket! Unlike a lot of aging cricketers (who get their kit out each Spring and tell themselves that they’ll have just one more season) I didn’t so much as hang up my boots one September, I actually threw them away!
However, I got so much pleasure from my years of playing, that I wanted to give something back to the game. I immediately embarked on an umpiring course. I had thought that I knew the laws of cricket well, but I was soon having my eyes opened. I was surprised to learn that there are forty-two laws of cricket and ten essential items that an umpire must take on to the field of play! Once a week, for six months, I attended two-hour-long seminars. Assessment consisted of a three-hour written examination followed by a practical of similar length. To become a full member of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers required a high percentage mark in both and I was fortunate enough to achieve this.

I started officiating in Premier League fixtures in Sussex but (faster than I had anticipated) I found myself ‘standing’ in Sussex inter-county matches from under-15s up to the 2nd XI and pre-season friendlies for the 1st XI. I had the pleasure of umpiring with first-class umpires and my partner in a 2nd XI game at Haywards Heath against Kent was ex-test umpire Peter Willey. I was also in the right place at the right time to be appointed to do my own ‘test match’ between England and India under-17s at Arundel.
According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I will follow the usual rule on word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected link words may go in front or behind my challenge word! The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm, when crofter will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past.
My second set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
