This is a tough one.
I think the us slang for a woman is JANE (as in Jane Doe for an unknown woman).
the second part of the clue is putting me off with the 'sounds like' bit.
but the phrase 'put oar in' could come from the COX and there is an actress
called Jane Cox. I am just not happy with the 'sounds like'.
Jane Cox is Lisa Dingle in Emmerdale.
Perhaps this is enough to trigger something from someone else.
just back from a trip out. Had another think, what about Jane Seymour ?

Do they have to be living? There was an actress, now dead, called Jane Rose (sounds like rows)
I have been thinking this one over all day at work. I take back all my answers as being rubbish.
I am now thinking completely differently and throw my suggestion out there to my other learned colleagues to help or confirm my next thought.
The first name has to be US slang for woman - This may be BETTY
putting your oar in means 'to be a meddlar' Could it therefore on a 'soundalike' be
Bette Midler? (I know she pronounces it Bet rather than Betty).
i was thinking the first name could be two parts, slang for usa, then girl or woman(miss or ms.
Hi vesuvius123, please don't tell me I read the clue wrong my brain hurts as it is.
I bet when we find out the answer it is going to be sooooooo obvious.
Yeah I bet it could be in three parts. What is slang for the USA? Uncle Sam, the states,
it can't be Samantha something.
USA slang for a woman is often BROAD. I don't know if this is any help to you. I tried.
or could the answer start 'dame'...I tried too and got nowhere
I am not clever enough to solve this, I am out of my depth on this one.
However, after doing a google search, someone out there has suggested the name Honey Rose. Google this name and see what you think. Good luck.
Is this 1 clue or 2?
