16d: Sailor beaming, not one seen as scratchy type. Answer: Abrading.
Why would 'beaming, not one seen as' become 'rading'?

29a Sparrows - 'spar' (x 1) + 'rows' (plural) = "at least 3 quarrels". (Sneaky, as "quarrels" can mean "arrows", leaving 'Sp' to fit in...)
