I've managed to do the whole thing, but can anyone tell me why 28 Across: "Conductors in Boston have nothing to go on after this" should be "Last train"? What's Boston got to do with it?

Many thanks

Boston is just used to indicate the USA usage of conductors as train guards

I think it's just to indicate that conductors is an American term (we call them guards in the UK)

I've reported this spammer but maybe the Ed has nipped out to the shops
Ah- the Ed seems to be back.

Thank you, bulliver and Calibax. It puzzled me because there is a Boston in England. That said, I enjoyed the 'fours' theme. With a rubric of unclued words, etc. I thought it was very like the Antico crosswords in The Oldie. I wonder if the Sunday Times will do another one like it. I hope so. Thanks again.
