Q56. Is the answer to this Michael Caine's character in the 1971 or the 2000 version of the film? The person I do this quiz with has the 1971 character, but is this being too obvious?  Is the 1971 version inspired by the novel and the 2000 version inspired by the 1971 version?

What do others think?

Afraid its not Carter

Can you tell me how you know it's not Carter?  The question gives no clue, apart from the film being inspired by the novel Jack's Return Home, which could apply to both films.

The two characters mentioned in the question only appear in one of the films, the 2000 version, therefore the Michael Caine character cannot be Carter. Carter was played by Sly Stallone in the 2000 version and having seen and appreciated the original, I feel this is a diabolical liberty.

Go ahead Marje and put Carter down as the answer if that is what you think it is.

I cannot understand why you cannot research these fully after all it seems that you do the quiz with another person and therefore have twice the resource of the chap who has won it every month for ages (according to the Quizmail review Phil Smith does it on his own). I would suggest you try reading the question carefully.

Elsewhere on this site literally only a few days after the quiz has been published you posed a long list of questions which you know admit to having found. Why did you not exhaust your research before asking for help. It is people such as you that will spell the end of postal quizzers by disillusioning those who are prepared to research hard for the answers.

I cannot see what satisfaction you achieve from letting other people do all your work for you. If you are brave enough tell us what team name you use in Quizmail and we can all assesss your results.

One of the characters mentioned does not appear in the 1971 version.

postalquiz: Why is it that a person cannot ask a question or even a list of questions (it was only a few, not a long list) without someone complaining about it.  If you don't want to supply an answer then that's fine, it's entirely your choice.

As for letting other people do all the work for me, that's rubbish.  I do research my answers on the Internet and in reference books.  It's only after I've been looking for days without a result that I'll ask for help, help being the operative word, a clue will do.  It doesn't really matter whether it's only a few days into the quiz or not, believe me I've been researching hard.

This is another thing I can't fathom.  Why do you look on Answerbank if you don't want to either help or be helped?  I'd be interested in your answer.

We got 147 last month, not brilliant, but not too bad either.

Oh yes, and Phil Smith doesn't do it on his own, he does it with his wife, however, this does not detract from the fact that their performance is indeed, most impressive and should be applauded.

Thanks for the help Del424.  I'd better read the questions more carefully hadn't I or I'll be having postalquiz on my back again!
Question Author
Del424, yes Phil Smith and his wife do have an impressive record.  They deserve all the praise they get.  They are an inspiration and I'll really have to read the webpages a bit more closely in future so that I don't need to ask so many questions.
I did a similar thing last month when I only checked 75% of 148 and dragged my team down into the Wilder trap.  Mind you they failed to check that I was wrong. The wounds are still healing after Vic and Dave twisted the knife in the answers.  BATA in Feb, Wilder in March, which one this month, well not this one anyway.

Marje,

You miss the point that I made. If answers are posted to postal quizzes on sites such as this then the numbers taking part will reduce due to the fact that thise who spend time researching will be disillusioned.

Bill of GBQ has made this point abundently clear in his most recent newsletter.

You also asked why I am here - Google tends to lead you here is the initial answer and secondly I want to see what is being given away. I research all my answers and yes find it frustrating when a couple of hours hard work and satisfaction is spoilt by a poster giving the answer outright.

Please remember that through your postings you could be damaging the future of postal quizzing which would be very sad for all those genuinely interested in quiz.
