Stargazer, no need to start an additional thread - you could have just added this into your original question..... I think P being pronounced as PEA gives the answer.

S is short for south, a point of the compass. PEA stands for perioperative epidural anaesthesia. An anaesthetic makes you numb, therefore it is a numb-er.

Sorry,Stargazer, had to do something- I think everything has been explained to you now. People who do cryptic crosswords would probably know that number can also mean an anaesthetic. Hope all is clear now-crptic clues can be difficult!

Thanks valanne, explained it to me as well. Numb-er..... a bit like flow-er, then, which can often mean River as well as something pretty in the garden!
