1. According to Wikipedia John CATER played a hall porter in The Duchess of Duke Street but the dog was called Fred.

Maybe the dog's real name was Jumbo and he played a dog called Fred?

3. Newcastle was a coal mining area and colliers were whippet men. Just a suggestion but it may have been connected with organised whippet racing?
