Is the patron saint of the archdiocese of Tuam Jariath instead of Jarlath, or have I got the arrangement wrong? Or possibly Jacinth?

Have tried Jarlath in all eight positions but can't get it to fit with the other answers in any of them. Everything else fitted but I was left with JA?I?T?

Sorry, I am not familiar with the puzzle. I have never seen "Jarlath" spelt any other way.

I am going to review my individual answers tomorrow and then check placement although I don't think i have any errors.
It could be that Setter has confused 'l' with 'i' in that particular clue. Not likely I think but not impossible.

Well, I have just come across an obituary where the good Monsignor is said to have gone to St Jariath's College, Tuam so it appears to be an alternative spelling. And, with that spelling, the crossword fits together.

Thanks stevenj. I also found a similar site giving an alternative spelling. Think I'll stick with the I instead of the L ...... unless anyone comes up with another solution. :o)

Hello again, following Stevenj's post I looked for 'Jariath' using Google and found nothing.
I have now tried a 'blast from the past' - WebCrawler , and have found several hits related to Tuam. Whether this is a legitimate alternative spelling or someone misreading text we may never know.
Based on Didymus's past record with weird spelling I am going with Jariath.

Not doing this crossword, but have looked looked up my Irish Brewers and it does indeed give Jariath as the spelling.

Have searched the text of the Irish Brewers on the Amazon website and both spellings come up, though Jarlath more than Jariath and, looking at the image of the main entry, Jarlath looks more likely. Will just have to accept Jariath though as a possible variant.
Cannot trust Brewers as the final authority any more after discovering that Helen of Troy was the daughter of Thetis (see under Momus) and that the Maid of Kent protested against Henry VIII's divorce from Anne Boleyn (both in last 2 editions of P&F!). Have emailed editors so hope these will be corrected, but it destroys one's faith in them.

Hi all. I have just received an e-mail from Prospect Magazine saying that there is a spelling mistake in the 'J' clue. They are going to try and announce it in the on-line version. ;o)
