women 7
mules 49
sack 343
knives 2401
sheaves 16807
 19607

Women - 7

Mules - 7 x 7 = 49

Sacks - 49 x 7 = 343

Loaves - 343 x 7 = 2401

Knives - 2401 x 7 = 16807

sheathes - 16807 x 7 = 117649

Quickest way is to count the steps (there are 6) - women, mules, sacks, loaves, knives, sheathes.  Then do 7 to the power 6 - and you get 117649!

:-)

7 women

7 women x 7 mules = 49

49 mules x 7 sacks = 343

343 sacks x 7 loaves = 2401

2401 loaves x 7 knives = 16807

16807 knives x 7 sheaths = 117649

total on road = 137256

How many are on the road?

If each woman is on a mule, there are only fortynine on the road.  (that is mules)

If the question means people, the answer is seven and one does not have to do the maths!

The original way I heard this was

As I was going to St Ives, I chanced to meet seven wives

Each wife carried a sack, each sack had seven cats

Each cat have seven kits

Kittens, cats, sacks, and wives,

How many were going to St. Ives?

And the answer was one (me).  Because the wives, et al, were going the other way.

There's nothing to say that the women have the mules WITH them.  Nor is there anything to say about OTHER PEOPLE going to Rome.

I concede I forgot to add it all up!
