Take the 2nd question: 1/3 = 5/?
Take 5 small things (buttons or something) and put them in a pile. That will represent 1/3 or one 'third'. Make 2 more piles each of 5 things so that you now have 3 individual thirds. So how many things have you got altogether (which is number you are looking for) when 5 = one third ?
For the first one:
3 over 5 = something over 10
10=2*5
so you have doubled the bottom number.
Basic rule: What you do to the bottom number you must do to the top number.
So: 3/5 = 6/10
The Second one:
1 over 3 = 5 over something:
The top number has been multiplied by 5 so you do this to the bottom number:
1/3 = 5/15
Hope this helps, rather than just copy the answers.
Hooray WyeDyed and Carrots99. I knew someone would be able to explain the principle of it all. I know what to do but found it hard to identify a rule.
Thanks.
